When trees die or fall they are sometimes deposited into river beds or or floodplanes. Whilst some trees simply decompose others become buried in sediment and a huge amount of volcanic ash. The silica that was contained in the volcanic ash would have dissolved in the water and as it travelled down into the ground where the trees were buried it filled or replaced the cell walls and then crystalised.
This material is truly fascinating stuff.
