Iranian Turquoise, also known as Persian Turquoise, or Firoza locally, has been prized for thousands of years. Bluer turquoise is often used in architecture to cover the domes of palaces and mosques as the colour is seen as a symbol of heaven on earth.

Turquoise was one of the first gemstones ever to be mined back in 4th century BC by the Egyptians.

It is a highly regarded and prized stone in Iran. It was the nation gemstone of Persia and it was used to decorate everything from thrones to ornamental objects. In those days people thought that turquoise was thought to warn it's wearer of illness by changing colour. Interestingly, the more reasonable explanation to this would be that turquoise is a porous stone so when it is worn next to the skin it can absorb oil from ones body therefore causing it to change colour.

The vast majority of turquoise for sale will have gone through a process of stabilisation, either by pressure filling the porous stone with a stabilising filler or by grinding down the turquoise into a powder and then mixed with epoxy to reconstitute it. These processes mean that otherwise unsuitable low grade turquoise can be used for jewellery. Colour enhances are also typically added in these processes.

Our turquoise is genuine old mined, unprocessed, natural stock. All turquoise will fade over time.

This lovely stone has been cut leaving some natural texture showing the composition and spider web intricacies of the turquoise in the stone. The sandy coloured contrasting colour highlighting the soft blue/green beautifully.
