This hand-cut cabochon of picture jasper Disaster Peak Jasper has a landscape reminiscent  of rolling mountains in greys, browns tans and creams.

Disaster Peak is in the Trout Creek Mountains, Nevada.

The name Disaster Peak comes from the summit's tragic history where a confrontation between prospectors and the Paiutes resulted in the deaths of 4 people in 1864.

It's a reminder of the darker side of gemstone mining and why here at Sarah Reece Gemstones, sourcing material in the most ethical way is of the upmost importance to us.

The ranch is now in the hands of government and conservation organizations, and future access to digging is doubtful.
